Doubling back would be a waste of a lot of time and for most itineraries it makes far more sense to make this a one way trip.
The logic is simple: fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport, pick up a well equipped 4×4 at the airport or nearby depot, drive at your own pace north through the heartland of Tanzania and drop the vehicle off on arrival. No turnaround time limit. No wasted days going back down roads already travelled. You start your journey – whether it is a flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport, a Kilimanjaro trek, a visit to the Serengeti or a crossing into Kenya – without the vehicle becoming a burden.
It is worth being clear about what you are contracting for before you sign up. The one-way rental agreement will specify the exact pick up and drop off locations, the route or countries in which travel is permitted, the agreed drop off date and time, and the one-way repositioning fee that applies. Any deviation – leaving the vehicle somewhere other than agreed or crossing a border not specified in the contract – can result in huge additional costs or, in the worst case, the vehicle being considered unreturned. One way car rentals in Tanzania can start from Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport, and the vehicle can be dropped off at any other agreed location, which can be Nairobi, Kampala, Mombasa, Entebbe and Kigali among others. One way car rentals are the perfect solution for road trips, multi-city tours and multi-country itineraries: fast, simple and effective when planned carefully.
The most common one-way routes are:
Dar es Salaam – Arusha – Tanzania’s most traveled route by volume. Travelers arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport, pick up their 4×4 and head north along the A7 highway through the Mikumi corridor, then cross over to Chalinze, then continue north. The whole drive is 9-11 hours depending on road conditions, border wait at the Chalinze junction, and whether you stop. Many self-drive travellers passing through make a good overnight stop at Mikumi National Park, its gate is on the main highway and this gives a real introduction to a two-day safari before the northern circuit really gets going. Once in Arusha, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire are all within easy reach.
Dar es Salaam → Moshi — The same as the Dar–Arusha route, but terminating at the foot of Kilimanjaro, some 80 km east of Arusha on the A23. This route is particularly popular with trekkers who combine a climb of Kilimanjaro or Meru with a stay on the coast. Drop the vehicle at the Moshi depot, check into your guesthouse and begin your briefing for the climb the same evening.
Dar es Salaam → Arusha — The opposite route, taken by visitors who have completed the northern safari circuit and are heading south for a beach break on Zanzibar or the coast of the mainland. It’s weeks on dusty park roads and the thought of the Indian Ocean is appealing. Pick up a vehicle in Arusha and drive south at leisure, drop it off at the Dar office before catching a ferry or flight to Zanzibar.
Tanzania → Kenya (Arusha or Moshi → Nairobi or Mombasa) — One way cross border rentals into Kenya are widely available and are one of the most popular routes in the region. The Namanga border crossing between Tanzania and Kenya is a well established one and the drive from Arusha to Nairobi takes about five hours. Nairobi is the onward hub for travelers heading to Kenya’s Masai Mara, or connecting for international flights. The Arusha–Mombasa corridor is also popular with travellers connecting Tanzania’s northern parks with the Kenyan coast.
There are less common but perfectly possible one-way routes to Mwanza on the southern shore of Lake Victoria, to Kigali in Rwanda via the Rusumo or Kagitumba border and to Kampala or Entebbe in Uganda. These longer distance routes require planning, more paperwork and typically more costly repositioning fees.

One-sided Fees and Pricing
When a vehicle is returned in a different city, a one-way fee of approximately USD 300 is usually added. The total price will depend on the type of vehicle and the distance driven.
It’s worth knowing the reason behind this fee. If you drop off the vehicle in a different city to the one where you collected it, the rental company will have to send a driver from the original depot to collect it. If it’s a long drive that driver needs to get paid, fed and put up overnight. Plus fuel costs. Repositioning Dar–Arusha is several hundred kilometres of diesel and a full day’s work on the way back. The fee you pay at rental time is just part of that logistical reality.
Some operators quote closer to USD 250, particularly for shorter one-way routes or for repeat clients. And some are more costly for cross-border repositioning, which means the driver has to deal with paperwork at the border and has extra travel time. A partial repositioning cost is factored into the daily rental rate by some premium operators, effectively subsidising the one-way fee over the entire rental period – their headline price may look higher, but the all-in cost can be competitive.
Always check how the one-way fee is calculated before booking. Is it fixed no matter where you drop it off, or variable depending on distance? Is it included in the quoted total or added at invoicing? What happens if you change your drop-off point after confirming? Is VAT or any local levy added on top? Get the final number in writing, preferably as a line item in the official quote document.
