Kitulo National Park is a beautiful conservation area known for its montane grasslands and lush forests. The park is located on the Kitulo Plateau in Tanzania’s southern highlands, next to Mbeya town. This park has rare species in Tanzania like chimpanzees, blue swallows, red chalk hawks, kipengere seed-eaters, mountain swamp widows, zebras, monkeys, a variety of chameleons, lizards, frogs, spiders, and numerous small insects.
Kitulo National Park plays an essential role in the watershed for the Great Ruaha River, and is notable for being the first national park in tropical Africa created primarily for its botanical significance. Visitors can marvel at a stunning collection of orchids, the vibrant yellow-orange red-hot poker, as well as many aloes, proteas, geraniums, and impressive giant lobelias.
Reaching Kitulo National Park is an adventure in itself. It’s located about 90 kilometres from Songwe Airport, and the only way to get there is by road. From Songwe Airport, the park can be accessed via Isyonje, which is 90 kilometres away, or through the small town of Chimala, which is 125 kilometres away. If you’re driving, here, it’s 70 kilometres from Mbeya city through Isyonje, 103 kilometres from Mbeya city via Chimala, and 165 kilometres from Njombe town, taking the route through Ikonda and Makete. Self-drive tours here depart from Dar es Salaam as its the easiest place to access Kitulo.
