🌍 13-Day Luxury Tanzania Safari β€” For 2 People

A journey through the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth, culminating in a pristine island paradise.

Overview

This 13-day itinerary takes you through Tanzania’s most iconic destinations β€” from the sweeping plains of the Serengeti and the ancient bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater, to the remote wilderness of Tarangire and the spice-scented shores of Zanzibar. Every night is spent at a handpicked luxury lodge or tented camp, and every day brings encounters with Africa’s most legendary wildlife.

Approximate Cost: USD $18,000 – $28,000 per couple (flights excluded), depending on season and lodge selection.

Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1–2 β€” Arrival in Arusha: The Safari Gateway

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport. You’ll be transferred in a private vehicle to a luxury lodge on the outskirts of Arusha β€” think Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge or Rivertrees Country Inn, set among lush coffee plantations with views of Mount Meru.

Use Day 2 to rest, enjoy a spa treatment, and receive a private safari briefing. A sunset cocktail on the veranda sets the tone for what lies ahead.

🏑 Stay: Arusha Coffee Lodge or equivalent | 2 nights

Day 3–5 β€” Tarangire National Park: The Elephant Kingdom

A short bush flight takes you south into Tarangire, a dramatically underrated park famous for its towering baobab trees and extraordinary elephant concentrations β€” sometimes herds of 300+. The Tarangire River acts as a magnet for wildlife during the dry season.

Game drives here feel intimately private compared to the Serengeti. Expect lions lazing under acacias, leopards in the fever trees, and vast flocks of birds along the riverbanks. Sundowner drinks in the bush as the baobabs glow amber are unforgettable.

🏑 Stay: Oliver’s Camp or Tarangire Treetops | 3 nights

Day 6–8 β€” Ngorongoro Crater: The Eighth Wonder

Drive or fly into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where you’ll descend 600 metres into the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. The crater floor teems with an extraordinary density of wildlife β€” the “Big Five” are all present, including a resident population of black rhino, now critically endangered.

Your luxury camp sits on the crater rim, offering ethereal mist-draped mornings and panoramic views. A full-day crater floor game drive is the centrepiece of this leg. In the evenings, enjoy gourmet dinners under the stars with the sounds of the bush all around.

🏑 Stay: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge or Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp | 3 nights

Day 9–11 β€” The Serengeti: Africa’s Greatest Stage

The crown jewel. A bush flight deposits you in the heart of the Serengeti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting of the legendary Great Migration (if visiting July–October, witness millions of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara River in a raw, thunderous spectacle).

Your luxury mobile camp or permanent lodge moves with or positions itself near the action. Exclusive private game drives, guided bush walks, and optional hot-air balloon safaris at dawn offer perspectives unavailable anywhere else on Earth. A champagne breakfast on the plains after a balloon flight is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

🏑 Stay: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Singita Grumeti, or &Beyond Klein’s Camp | 3 nights

Day 12–13 β€” Zanzibar: Island Epilogue

Trade the savanna for the sea. A direct flight from the Serengeti airstrip takes you to Zanzibar, Tanzania’s jewel island in the Indian Ocean. Stone Town’s spice-laden alleyways, Swahili architecture, and vibrant bazaars reward a morning of wandering.

Spend your final afternoon on the white sands of the north or northeast coast β€” Nungwi or Matemwe β€” where turquoise waters and coral reefs await. Enjoy a dhow sunset cruise with fresh seafood, a couples’ beach massage, and a lingering farewell dinner.

🏑 Stay: The Manta Resort, Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas, or Matemwe Lodge | 2 nights

Key Tips for a Luxury Tanzania Safari

Pack light β€” bush flights have strict luggage limits (typically 15 kg soft bag). Your lodge will have laundry facilities. Book 12–18 months ahead for peak season, as the top camps have very limited capacity. Bring a good telephoto lens; the light in the golden hours is extraordinary. And always tip your guide β€” they are the soul of the experience.

Tanzania rewards the traveller who gives it time. Thirteen days is just enough to fall completely, irrevocably in love with it. 🦁
